This Cometic Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) head gasket is built with multiple embossed stainless steel layers, featuring a Viton rubber coating on the outer layers. This construction is designed to handle the high output of big block V8 engines, providing a strong seal without needing additional sealants. The Viton coating is heat resistant up to 482 degrees Fahrenheit, making it suitable for harsh sealing environments and various surface finishes.
The center shim layer is uncoated stainless steel, allowing for different thickness requirements, and in this case, it's set at a compressed operating thickness of 0.098 inches with a bore of 4.250 inches. MLS gaskets are well-suited for applications with aluminum heads and either aluminum or cast iron blocks, as they can withstand the shearing forces that can occur between dissimilar metals. The multiple stainless steel layers also contribute to increased strength and resistance to corrosion.
