This Cometic Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) head gasket is built with multiple embossed layers of stainless steel, featuring an outer layer coated with Viton rubber. This construction is designed to handle the demands of high-output Pontiac V8 engines, specifically those with 400, 428, or 455 cubic inch displacements and a 4.160-inch bore. The Viton coating on the outer layers is heat resistant up to 482°F (250°C), making it suitable for sealing in harsh environments and various load conditions, even when mating aluminum heads to cast iron blocks. The center shim layer is uncoated stainless steel, allowing for precise thickness control, and this particular gasket has a compressed operating thickness of 0.027 inches and an overall thickness of 0.066 inches. These MLS gaskets are well-suited for both aluminum-to-aluminum and aluminum-to-cast iron head and block combinations, as they can effectively manage the shearing forces that can occur between dissimilar metals.
