Product Details
When you're looking to give your Chevrolet Big Block GEN VI engine that unmistakable, aggressive idle and a serious boost in performance, the COMP Cams Big Mutha' Thumpr camshaft is a popular choice. This camshaft is designed to create that signature race car sound at idle, thanks to its early intake valve opening and extended exhaust duration. It's built to deliver noticeable horsepower gains and a broader torque curve, making it a great option for muscle cars and street rods. This particular camshaft, the CBVI 299Th R7, is a hydraulic roller camshaft specifically for Chevrolet Big Block GEN VI engines, like those found in 1996-1999 C2500 Suburbans and K2500s, or C3500 trucks.
To really make this camshaft shine and ensure your drivetrain stays in the powerband, COMP Cams recommends using an aftermarket torque converter with a stall speed of 2800 RPM or higher, along with lower gear ratios. You'll also want to make sure your engine has at least 9.5:1 compression and is set up with an intake, headers, and appropriate gearing. Because this camshaft design typically reduces vacuum at idle, you'll need to plan for a vacuum canister, pump, or hydroboost system if your vehicle relies on power brakes. The extended duration and overlap create a very rough idle, which is part of its aggressive character.
This camshaft is a significant upgrade for performance-minded builders. It's important to note that this camshaft is not CARB approved and cannot be shipped to California. Always refer to the manufacturer's installation instructions for specific details regarding required components and procedures.
