First, they protect the cylinder head deck and the shim underneath from the intense forces of aggressive valve springs. Second, they provide a locating shoulder on the inside to properly center the valve spring and keep it seated correctly.

The design here is an updated approach from COMP Cams. Instead of a cup that requires machining the head to fit on the outside, this is an inside diameter (ID) locator. This means the locating shoulder is on the inside, and the spring cup is integrated, making installation simpler without needing extensive head modification. This particular seat has a 1.540-inch outside diameter and a .640-inch inside diameter, designed to work with a variety of COMP Cams dual valve springs like their 950, 26956, and 999 series.
