About this part

Product Details

COMP Cams is a well-known name in performance engine parts, and their Thumpr camshaft series is designed to give your muscle car or street rod that unmistakable aggressive idle. This particular camshaft, the CB 279T H7, is a hydraulic flat tappet grind that works with a wide range of Chevrolet Big Block engines, including popular models like the Chevrolet Impala, Chevelle, and Camaro from the late 60s through the mid-70s. It's built to create that race-car-like exhaust note at idle, thanks to its early intake valve opening and long exhaust duration, which also helps build a broad torque curve and significant horsepower gains.

This camshaft features a nitrided finish, which is a surface hardening process that helps improve wear resistance and durability for the camshaft lobes. While it can work with a stock torque converter, you'll get the best performance and keep the engine in its powerband with an aftermarket torque converter and a lower gear ratio, ideally something 2000 RPM or higher. Keep in mind that camshafts like this often reduce vacuum at idle, so if your vehicle uses power brakes, you'll likely need to install a vacuum canister, pump, or hydroboost system to maintain proper brake assist.
