The foam backing serves double duty. It gives the fabric enough body to hold its shape against the headliner board, and it adds a layer of sound absorption that helps dampen road noise inside the cabin. Heads-Up describes the material as wrinkle-resistant, which matters during install since headliner fabric can be tricky to position smoothly. The kit is designed to go over your vehicle's existing headliner board, so you are not fabricating anything from scratch. You remove the board, strip the old fabric, apply adhesive, lay the new material, trim to fit, and reinstall.
