They're designed to make it easier to adjust your vehicle's camber and caster angles, which are key to proper tire wear and handling. You'll find these sleeves are often used on RWD and 4WD trucks from these makes, helping mechanics save time during alignments.
The process involves loosening the upper ball joint pinch bolt and using a sleeve puller tool to remove the old sleeve. You can then install this 1/2 degree sleeve to make your adjustments. For RWD applications, expect to be able to change camber and caster by about 0.50 degrees. On 4WD Ford and Mazda light trucks and SUVs, the adjustment range is a bit smaller, around ±0.040 degrees. They come with a clear zinc coating to help resist corrosion, keeping them working well for a long time.
