They let you make quick adjustments to the toe setting, giving you the ability to dial in your alignment precisely. This particular shim offers a toe adjustment range of plus or minus 0.40 degrees, which is about 3/16ths of an inch of movement.
These shims are designed to be used on beam type axles, and you'll need one per wheel for the adjustment. They're made from nylon, which helps prevent corrosion and can be easier to work with than metal shims in some situations. Keep in mind that you'll need to check for clearance with your brakes and rotors after installation, as SPC notes that additional spacers (like their 75970) might be required in some cases. Also, these shims are not recommended for use on AWD vehicles.
