Product Details
When you're swapping in a TH400 transmission into your 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird, you'll need a robust way to handle the torque arm. This tunnel-mounted torque arm from UMI Performance is designed to do just that, by moving the torque arm's front mounting point off the transmission tailshaft. This setup protects your transmission's tailshaft from damage, which is crucial, especially with higher horsepower applications. It also offers a bolt-in solution for installing a TH400, complete with a new crossmember that has provisions for the transmission and this adjustable torque arm.
What you get in this kit is a complete package designed for a clean installation. The front mounting point features a grease-able pivot with instant center adjustment, allowing you to fine-tune your suspension's geometry for better launches and improved handling. This adjustment is made easy with an on-car adjuster built from heat-treated 4140 chromoly steel. The rear mounting plates are constructed from thick 0.375-inch mild steel and are designed to fit stock rear-ends, as well as common aftermarket 12-bolt and 9-inch housings. The crossmember itself is built from sturdy 0.120-inch rectangular tubing, and the torque arm connects to it using 0.250-inch steel pivot plates and Grade 8 hardware. UMI Performance chose Energy Suspension polyurethane bushings for the connection points. These are grease-able to help prolong their life and are specifically selected to minimize road noise and prevent the clunks often associated with other torque arm setups, keeping your cabin more comfortable.
This torque arm is a complete bolt-in design, meaning no welding or drilling is required for installation, and it can be installed using basic hand tools. It's designed to eliminate wheel hop and solve traction problems, while also reducing front-end nose dive during braking. The kit includes all necessary mounting plates, the crossmember, the torque arm itself, and hardware. It's important to note that if you're running a stock rear-end or a Strange or similar rear-end that uses a straight-through bolt design, you'll likely need a new hardware kit, as the factory bolts may be too short. However, if you have a Moser Engineering 12-bolt rear-end, you'll reuse the hardware supplied by Moser. For Moser 9-inch rears, this kit is recommended. This setup allows for on-car pinion angle adjustments, giving you more control over your vehicle's performance.
