How It Works

Blue Devil Head Gasket Sealer uses a high-temperature sodium silicate adhesive that creates a permanent chemical weld at the leak site. Unlike particulate-based sealers that rely on solid matter to physically plug gaps, Blue Devil contains no particles, fibers, or solids of any kind. That means it flows freely through your cooling system without clogging heater cores, radiator passages, or water jackets.

The sealing mechanism is driven by temperature differential. When the liquid reaches a leak point — where combustion gases meet coolant — the extreme heat causes the sodium silicate to cure and harden into a permanent glass-like seal. Areas of the cooling system at normal operating temperature remain unaffected. The result is a targeted, durable repair that bonds to cast iron, aluminum, alloy, plastic, and steel surfaces.

How to Apply

The 38386 is a full-strength formula that requires a specific application process. Skipping steps is the most common reason for a failed seal.

  1. Remove the thermostat. Reinstall the housing without it. This ensures unrestricted coolant flow so the product circulates fully through the engine and head gasket area.
  2. Flush the cooling system. Drain the old coolant completely and flush with water. Any residual coolant or stop-leak products can interfere with the chemical reaction.
  3. Fill with water. Fill the system with plain water — do not add coolant at this stage.
  4. Pour in Blue Devil slowly. With the engine off, add the full 32 oz bottle into the radiator or reservoir slowly to avoid air pockets.
  5. Idle for 50 minutes. Start the engine and let it idle at operating temperature for a full 50 minutes. Do not drive. The heat-activated formula needs sustained temperature to cure at the leak site.
  6. Let cool, reinstall thermostat. After the idle period, shut down and allow the engine to cool completely. Reinstall the thermostat, drain the system, and refill with your normal coolant mixture.

38386 vs Pour-N-Go (00209)

Blue Devil sells two versions of this sealer. The 38386 (yellow label) is the full-strength, original formula — more concentrated and intended for serious leaks including blown head gaskets. It requires thermostat removal, a cooling system flush, and a 50-minute idle cycle. The Pour-N-Go 00209 (red label) is a diluted formula designed for convenience: you add it directly to the coolant without removing the thermostat. Pour-N-Go works for minor leaks but is not as effective on significant head gasket failures. If you know or suspect a blown head gasket, the 38386 is the right choice.

When to Use Blue Devil

Designed for: blown head gaskets, warped or cracked cylinder heads, leaking heater cores, and failed freeze plugs. It works on both gasoline and diesel engines and performs best on 4- and 6-cylinder configurations.

Not designed for: cracked engine blocks, external gasket leaks (valve cover, oil pan), or mechanical damage like broken bolts or stripped threads. Blue Devil seals internal coolant and combustion gas leaks — it cannot replace a gasket that has physically separated or repair structural damage to the block itself.

Ford Ranger 2.9 V6

My son's 89 Ranger was using around a quart of coolant per week in the few miles he drove to high school and home. I tried other coolant sealants with little or no improvement. The Blue Devil has been in the truck for a month or so and seems to have fully cured the problem. This stuff really works!

Blue devil works

I put Blue devil in a 2.2 L Mazda MX-6 engine. I put 100,000 miles on the engine since I put it in. I believe in this product. As long as you follow the instructions. I would recommend flushing your system completely with just clear water from you garden hose before you use this product. This will insure all your ports are clean.

Blue Devil

My 1999 Chevy Malibu overheated and probably blew at least one head gasket i cautously debated your product for a week but after pricing a headgasket repair of 400$ and more, i tried it after 40 minutes it was passing water and i was sweating but after 50 minutes it slowed down and after a test drive i am no longer loosing any water out the tailpipe. Thank you Blue Devil i am recommending your product too anyone with a problem like mine.

Blue devil

Amazing stuff! It worked on a blown head on my civic. When you have a lot of water coming out of your tail pipe and your car doesn't run on steam, that's not a good thing. Completely fixed the problem with no side affects.

Blue Devil

I have a 97 Outback that buried the temp guage while driving home from work. I had to stop and let it cool off 4 times in 8 miles. I was unable to drive the car until I used Blue Devil and it cured the problem. I highly recommend the product to older Subaru owners as they are known for head problems. I have since put 15000 miles on the car and no problems.

Caterpiller in Kenworth

I know what people think about mechanics in a bottle, But this stuff WORKS !!!! I bought 2 quarts to try and fis my nephews water leaking problem in his tractor. Man at the auto parts store asked why I was buying 2 qrts. I told him it was going in a tractor that was using 3 gallons of water in about 900 miles. We could not see where it was leaking so we figured it was going out the stacks. The parts store guy said I did not need to put 2 qrts. in that 1 was more than enough, I was skeptical and he told me this is the best sealer on the market today!! I followed the instructions on the bottle and crossed my fingures. The truck now has more than 10,000 miles on it and still has not used ANY WATER !!!!!!! This stuff works and I'LL buy it again when and if ever needed !!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Blue Devil, You saved me $ 2200.00 in repail bills that I couldn't afford right now!!!!!!

IT WORKS

I've used this on 2 cars my 90 Caddy that had a Compression leak into the cooling system. I could actually hear the engine sound and run better as I let it run per instructions. The 2nd car I used it on was a Chrysler LeBaron with the Mitz. V6 the exhaust from the flush would burn your eyes. 10 mins. into the running with the Blue Devil and that car quit smoking. I live in AZ. and cars with disconnected heater cores are very common out here. I plan to use this in every car I end up with whether it has a cooling issue or not. I can be used as a preventive treatment.

Blue Devil Engine & Cooling Sealant

Had a 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible that had multiple leaks from the freeze plugs. Estimate to pull the engine and replace the plugs was $2,500.00. Had my mechanic drain and flush the system clean, remove the thermostat and then refill and add the Blue Devil Sealant. Ran the engine for about an hour and the results so far, are excellent. It's been about 3 weeks now and no signs of leaking.

Charles

worked well

My Ford Windstar overheated, after that it kept overheating so I took it into a shop. I was 250 miles from home and didn't have the money for a mechanic to dig into it. I asked if there was a product that would allow me to get home on whatever the problem was (head gasket, warped head, cracked head or cracked block). I didn't have the tools to remove the thermostat so I called an independent mechanic shop. They did all the work, I bought Blue Devil, engine flush and a thermostat. They did a great job, Started on the road as soon as they were done and it held the entire way home and is still holding. Thanks Blue Devil!!!

Worked Great!

My older F150 had a cracked head that was leaking radiator fluid into one of the spark plug wells (shorting the #4 plug). Both of my most trusted mechanics said to get a new truck. I used 2-qts of Blue Devil since my coolant capacity was slightly larger than that recommended for 1-qt. Sealed everything up and the truck has been running great for a month. Thanks Blue Devil!

cracked block

My 99 Cummins engine was cracked from one end to the other I couldn't keep water in it I've tried many other products with no success I put one quart of blue devil in two weeks ago according to directions and I have not lost a drop of coolant since then it has amazed me I never thought it would work but it did.

blue devil

my daughters 1999 ford expedition. 4.6 v-8. had her heater core replaced at a shop and they didn't secure the heater hose connection at the firewall. lost most of her coolant in a real hurry. resulting in both head gaskets blown. shop offered to share the phenomenal cost of replacing them. I got a quart of blue devil, followed directions and woohoo. over two years later and it's still crooning like Crosby. I was so impressed I went back and bought another quart to keep in the garage just for future in case the need ever arises in another of our vehicles

head gasket

I never give reviews on products, but in this case I have to. I did a block test and had combustion gases in my radiator. I need to have head gaskets replaced but do not have the $2100.00 it cost to do it. My mechanic recommended this product. It actually fixed it. I cannot believe. It seems to be a great product.
